Night Beats

Night Beats guitarist Danny Lee Blackwell tears it up with a psychedelic blend of R&B and rock. He achieves these amazing sounds through dedicated technique and inspired song writing. Unlike many guitarists in the psychedelic rock scene Night Beats has a stripped down set-up using just 2 or 3 effects pedals. Drawing sound from a 60’s Fender spring reverb pedal, EHX Sovtek Big Muff Fuzz and a hint of delay. The guitar and amp are his primary tools allowing him to create the raw inspired rock leads and rhythm.

Blackwell currently (2017) is touring with two main guitars a Eastwood Airline Jupiter Pro and a Vintage Valco Airline Town and Country or an Eastwood Airline Town and Country, he owns one of each. The Eastwood Airline Jupiter Pro has a black sparkle finish and a curved white pick guard. This guitar is a recreation of the 1960’s Silvertone Jupiter. It is very similar to the original at first glance, however, the modern version does have a different bridge and is manufactured in Korea designed to be roadworthy. The Valco Airline Town and Country is all original and is used on just a few songs in live sets sometimes replaced with the Eastwood Airline Town and Country.

In early 2016 Night Beats performed on Tenement TV and Blackwell was using a EHX Big Muff Pi Sovtek Black Russian and a Boss FRV-1 63’ Fender Reverb. In November of 2016 during Fuzz Club Sessions “Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut” he plays the Jupiter Pro with the Fender reverb pedal, Black Russian Big Muff and a Boss DD-7.

The studio albums feature a more complex set up. Blackwell uses a variety of guitars and effects for the recording process. Sonic Bloom was recorded on tape using 6 different guitars and 5 different amps (See details below). The latest album Who Sold our Generation features a wide variety of sounds especially in the strange and experimental intro track. The album was recorded in Echo Park Studio. Despite my best efforts I have not been able to find any information about what kind of amps, guitars and pedals were used in the creation of this album.
